Text: Ezekiel 18:23

Theme: THE DISCRETION TO SHOW MERCY

Memory Verse: "And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee: and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy." (Exodus 33:19)

God holds the discretion to show mercy. He says He will be gracious to whom He will be gracious and will show mercy on whom He will show mercy. It is not going to depend on people’s verdict or opinion about a person. Instead, it is solely going to depend on whom God chooses to show mercy. Of course, it is not going to be based on righteousness, handsomeness or beauty, educational qualification, working experience, marital status, etc. It will depend on God’s choice. This means, He can even show mercy to a robber, fraudster, adulterer, fornicator, etc., as long as it pleases him.

It is possible that the person God desires to show mercy is not a popular choice. Some people might argue that the recipient does not deserve mercy or is worthy of death. But then, it is only God who determines who is worthy to live or die. Meanwhile, He has made it clear that He has no gain in the death of any sinner, but instead desires that he repents, receive mercy and live eternally. That is why He is ready to show mercy even to the vilest of sinners.

No matter the judgment your enemy has passed upon you, the truth is that it is not valid as long as it has no approval from heaven. Even if your sin has reached heaven like those of the people of Nineveh, you still have the opportunity to receive God’s mercy because only He has the discretion to forgive and show mercy. You can still be that man whom God will be gracious to, and whom He will show mercy. As for the people of Nineveh, the whole city repented from their sin; from the greatest to the least including the king. They poured ashes upon them and fasted for three days neither eating nor drinking while crying for mercy on account of their sin, and He that delights in mercy showed and cancelled the judgment against them. Today, repent and cry out for mercy and you too can be that man whom God will be gracious to, and whom He will show mercy.

Worship/praise God and then take the following prayer points:

1. O God, by your mercy, forgive all my sins, in Jesus name.

2. O God, sanctify my spirit, soul and body, in Jesus name.

3. Lord, make me worthy, righteous and acceptable in your sight, in Jesus name.

4. O Lord, let your mercy defend our G.O. speak on his behalf and in his favour, in Jesus name.

After graduating university, Ethan spent three difficult years trying different businesses and not making any money. But when he finally started seeking God seriously, everything changed. God refined him, revealed his real gifts, gave him clarity on his purpose, and he began to see real fruit.
